Roscosmos shares detailed Moon photographs

Roscosmos has posted a striking series of Moon images on its Telegram channel, captured from Earth by an astrophotographer.

Northern region and the Sea of Nectar craters

The opening photograph shows the Moon’s northern area, with its major surface formations clearly visible. The second picture features the well-known crater trio close to the Sea of Nectar: Theophilus, Cyrillus and Catharina, which form a particularly dramatic arrangement.

Moon terminator reveals the surface relief

One image was taken near the terminator, the boundary separating the illuminated and dark sides of the Moon. This is where the terrain appears at its most spectacular: the low Sun casts elongated shadows, revealing even the finest surface features, including terraces inside craters, strings of small depressions and distinctive impact-ejecta traces.

The photographs were taken with a Celestron 9.25 telescope, an ASI533MM Pro camera and an IR PASS 850 infrared filter. The equipment was mounted on an AM5 mount. Notably, the imaging took place during daylight hours; the infrared wavelength delivered this level of sharpness and contrast while almost entirely removing the effects of atmospheric disturbance.
