What Exus and Pombagiras Do in Spiritual Development

Exus and Pombagiras are among the best-known entities in Afro-Brazilian religions, yet they are also among those that prompt the most questions and misunderstandings. Over the years, popular beliefs and prejudice have wrongly linked them with negative forces.

According to the priestess Matildes, this perception bears little resemblance to the spiritual tradition she practises. She explains that Exus and Pombagiras act as agents of transformation, supporting people through processes of empowerment, protection and spiritual development.

A shared purpose

The priestess says that every Exu and every Pombagira has distinct traits and areas of activity. Nevertheless, they all share the same purpose: guiding those seeking to develop awareness, balance and responsibility for their own lives.

Main areas of activity

Among the principal areas in which these entities may work are:

  • Breaking negative cycles: they help people recognise recurring patterns, limiting beliefs and harmful relationships that hinder personal growth;
  • Building confidence: they encourage the development of self-esteem, courage and the assurance needed to face challenges and make important decisions;
  • Spiritual protection: in accordance with the tradition's principles, they work to defend against energies regarded as unbalanced, harmful spiritual influences, envy and spiritual demands;
  • Prosperity and fulfilment: they support behavioural changes, discipline, focus and clarity, helping people make the most of opportunities in their professional and financial lives;
  • Opening paths: they help remove spiritual and energetic blocks, making new paths more accessible when there is also commitment in the material realm;
  • Emotional balance: they support inner strength, helping people deal with fears, insecurities, impulses and highly pressurised situations.

The role of personal responsibility

For priestess Matildes, one of the greatest misconceptions is the belief that Exus and Pombagiras exist to grant wishes instantly or solve problems without the individual taking responsibility for their own choices.

“Exus and Pombagiras do not perform miracles or replace free will. They guide, strengthen and drive processes of change, but transformation happens when there is commitment, action and a willingness to evolve. Spiritual work goes hand in hand with each person's actions,” she says.
