Casa das Marinhas opens to visitors this summer

One of Portuguese modernist architecture’s most striking works will once again welcome the public this summer. Casa das Marinhas in Esposende can be visited free of charge from 20 to 25 July and from 27 July to 9 August, inviting both local residents and tourists to explore a building recognised nationally and internationally.

The opening forms part of the "Casa ConVida" programme and offers a close look at this landmark work by Esposende-born architect Viana de Lima, regarded as one of the most influential figures in 20th-century Portuguese architecture.

A landmark of Portuguese modernist architecture

Listed as a Monument of Public Interest since 2012, Casa das Marinhas is also part of the prestigious international Iconic Houses network and is registered with the DOCOMOMO International Foundation, which is dedicated to safeguarding the world’s most important examples of modern architecture.

Built between 1954 and 1957 as a family residence and holiday home, the house stands out for its innovative relationship with the surrounding landscape. It is widely regarded as one of Portugal’s finest examples of the modernist movement.

A native of Esposende, Viana de Lima developed a highly distinguished career in Portugal and abroad. He also maintained close links with some of the leading names in global architecture, including Brazilian architect Óscar Niemeyer, a key reference in modern architecture.

Free visits and guided tours at Casa das Marinhas

During the opening periods, Casa das Marinhas will be open free of charge from 14:00 to 18:00, with final admission available until 30 minutes before closing. Alongside self-guided visits, free guided tours will also be offered by advance booking.

More than simply an opportunity to visit a historic building, the initiative provides a journey through the history of contemporary Portuguese architecture and the life of one of its most significant protagonists.

Through this initiative, Esposende Municipality aims to continue enhancing the municipality’s cultural heritage and establish the area as a leading cultural tourism destination, showcasing a space that combines memory, innovation, identity and architectural excellence.

Casa das Marinhas is now considered one of Esposende’s heritage treasures and an essential work for anyone interested in architecture, culture and history.
