Generation Z is growing up surrounded by screens and keyboards, typing from childhood what earlier generations learnt to write by hand. What may seem like a simple change of tool is beginning to concern researchers: a skill that has accompanied humanity for millennia is being abandoned, directly affecting how we think, remember and relate to one another.

A 5,500-year-old skill beginning to disappear

From the first inscriptions on clay in Mesopotamia to notes stuck on the fridge, handwriting has supported collective memory and everyday life. Now, part of that history appears to be giving way to frantic typing on five- or six-inch screens.

Recent research from the University of Stavanger in Norway highlights an alarming figure: around 40% of Generation Z young people no longer command handwritten communication at a functional level. This is not merely about poor handwriting, but a genuine difficulty in expressing themselves clearly when they need to use pen and paper.

This decline has not happened overnight. It is visible in everyday situations: young people who freeze when filling in forms by hand, students who struggle to write an essay without the support of automatic correction, and early-career professionals who avoid signing cards, notes or handwritten reports.

The keyboard’s effect on the brain

The move to digital tools goes far beyond a matter of convenience. Neuroscience studies suggest that handwriting and typing activate different brain circuits.

  • When writing by hand, the brain coordinates vision, fine motor skills, memory and language.
  • When typing, the action is more repetitive and automated, with less variation in movement.
  • This difference affects memory consolidation and the understanding of complex texts.

Teachers report that pupils who take notes by hand tend to retain the content of lessons and lectures more effectively. Because the process is slower, it requires them to filter, summarise and organise ideas. Those who type, on the other hand, often record almost everything without processing it, as if the keyboard were a kind of automatic copy of the teacher’s speech.

Teachers raise the alarm: short sentences, few paragraphs and hardly any exercise books

Accounts from teachers in different countries reveal a similar pattern. Nedret Kiliceri, a teacher quoted in the Turkish press, notes that even university students arrive at lessons without a pen, relying on laptops and mobile phones for every kind of note-taking.

According to her, many students:

  • avoid long sentences;
  • struggle to construct coherent paragraphs;
  • favour isolated phrases, as though they were writing social-media posts or comments;
  • have disorganised handwriting because they lack practice.

This pattern is not limited to Turkey. Brazilian teachers report similar phenomena: brief answers, fragmented texts, minimal punctuation and a strong influence from the conversational style used in messaging apps.

From letters to DMs: communication changes in form and pace

Generation Z was born into an environment of constant notifications. Messages are fast and direct, often filled with abbreviations, emojis and memes. Pen and paper can seem far too slow beside the pace of a WhatsApp group or an online gaming chat.

The impact emerges in highly tangible situations, far removed from academic theory. Young people who rarely write by hand face difficulties with tasks such as:

  • completing physical documents, contracts or official forms;
  • taking quick notes during meetings, interviews or technical visits;
  • writing examinations, competitive tests and university entrance exams that still require handwritten text;
  • leaving clear messages in situations without immediate access to a mobile phone.

Even in highly digital settings, there are still times when handwriting is required by law, tradition or logistics. When 40% of a generation no longer has a strong command of this skill, a mismatch arises between what institutions require and what young people can produce fluently.

What is lost when the hand no longer follows thought

Education researchers point out that handwriting is not simply a way to record ideas, but also a tool for arranging them. While writing, a person must consider the structure of a sentence, the relationship between paragraphs and the coherence of the text.

As this practice declines, several risks emerge:

  • greater difficulty in developing long lines of reasoning without losing track;
  • a tendency to think in short blocks resembling posts or chat messages;
  • less patience for reading and producing denser texts.

Social-media culture reinforces this fragmentation. The logic of the feed rewards people who can condense an idea into a few words or images. This trains the brain for quick responses rather than sustained argument.

Terms and concepts that help explain the phenomenon

Two concepts frequently appear in research on writing and technology:

  • Functional literacy: this means more than simply being able to read and write; it is the ability to use those skills to solve real-life problems, such as understanding a contract or medical instructions.
  • Cognitive load: the amount of mental effort needed to complete a task. Handwriting spreads this load across the hand, eye and brain, helping information to become fixed in memory.

When handwriting weakens, part of this cognitive training disappears. A young person may type quickly, yet encounter more barriers when developing complex ideas clearly.

Possible scenarios: school, work and daily life

If the trend continues, several possible scenarios are beginning to take shape. Schools may further reduce handwritten activities and move towards tablets and laptops, prioritising typing from the earliest years. At the same time, assessment systems may begin accepting typed examinations, with extensive use of automatic correction tools.

In businesses, handwritten meeting notes may be permanently replaced by collaborative cloud documents. Whiteboards may give way to shared screens. This could improve productivity in some respects, but it may also take new generations even further away from practising handwriting.

For those currently in their teens or starting university, a middle path could make a difference: continue using digital resources while setting aside specific moments to write by hand, such as study summaries, diaries, mind maps and project drafts.

A common experience in exam-preparation courses illustrates this point. Many teachers report that students accustomed only to typing significantly improve the clarity of their writing and their retention of content when they return to producing full essays on paper under timed conditions, as they would in official examinations.
