How to Create a Hotel Bed at Home

The welcoming feel, crisply stretched sheets, layered fabrics and velvety touch are all part of the hotel bed experience. In a luxury suite, making the bed involves a precise sequence: selecting fabrics, arranging each item and paying attention to the finishing details.

The so-called “hotel bed” has also inspired people who want to recreate the hospitality experience at home. This movement reflects growing interest in wellbeing and the home styling trend.

To demonstrate how to achieve this result, Catraca Livre asked the housekeeping team at the Sheraton São Paulo WTC Hotel to share tips for making a bed to a standard similar to that found in hotels.

Step-by-step guide to creating the perfect hotel bed at home

1 – The foundation: a cushioned effect

The key to deep softness begins before the sheets are even added. Using a pillow top-an extra layer of dense foam or feathers placed over the mattress-together with a cotton mattress protector creates an even surface. This helps extend the mattress's lifespan while providing the first layer of tactile comfort.

2 – Thread count: drape and tension

Fabric choices should favour 100% natural fibres, such as Egyptian cotton or cotton sateen, ideally with a thread count of 300 or more. Tucking the corners around the mattress keeps the fitted sheet taut throughout the night. A light mist of scented ironing water helps straighten the fibres and remove any creases from the fabric.

3 – Pillow geometry for a hotel bed

To create the classic hotel look, the recommendation is to use four main pillows arranged strategically:

• Back support: Two firmer pillows, such as memory-foam or high-support options, placed upright against the headboard.
• Front layer: Two softer pillows, with a feather or down-like feel, positioned in front to support the neck anatomically.
• Finishing touch: Two structured cushions or a central bolster to add depth and give the arrangement a visually complete look.

4 – The duvet line and the ‘cloud effect’

The signature volume at the top of the bed comes from using a duvet-a cover with removable filling. Folding the upper edge of the duvet together with the top-sheet fold creates an elegant contrast of textures and gives the bedding a visually light appearance.

5 – The final detail: the bed runner

To complete the home styling arrangement, place an item with a contrasting texture across the foot of the bed-such as a knitted throw, a substantial checked fabric or velvet. It breaks up the neutral palette and protects the foot area of the bed.
