Creative Circuits at Sesc São Caetano: August Creative Workshops

Throughout August, the Sesc São Caetano Technologies and Arts Space (ETA) hosts Creative Circuits, a programme of experiences centred on making, experimentation and the sharing of knowledge through a range of creative languages. Its activities introduce visitors to techniques used in film, animation, photography, sewing and visual arts, with workshops for children, young people and adults, from complete beginners to those wishing to develop their creative processes further.

Creative Circuits: a hands-on route through creative processes

Bringing these different languages and methods together, Creative Circuits presents a connected route through the processes of creation. Film, photography, animation, sewing and visual arts are linked by one central idea: learning through making. This gives the programme a shared direction, rather than presenting it simply as a series of separate workshops.

One of the highlights is the Storyboard for Film course, led by illustrator, storyboard artist and animator Lucas (Lukera) Andrade, taking place from 18 to 26 August. The course introduces storyboarding as a key audiovisual planning tool, examining framing, camera movement and visual storytelling through practical exercises, reference analysis and the development of illustrated sequences. With an established career in comics and audiovisual work, Lukera has created storyboards for Netflix and Paris Filmes productions, offering participants an insight into work carried out behind the scenes in cinema.

The programme also explores handmade animation through Moving Drawings: Flipbook, a workshop run by Technologies and Arts educator Weslley Silva (Lelo). Using one of animation’s most traditional techniques, participants create small illustrated books which, when flicked through quickly, produce the illusion of movement. The activity reveals fundamental principles of animated language in an accessible and enjoyable way.

Designed especially for people seeking greater independence in their use of digital technology, Digital Literacy: Between Clicks – Smartphone Photography introduces smartphone camera features and the basics of photographic composition. Through practical activity, the course encourages participants to become more familiar with mobile devices and to develop fresh perspectives on photography and everyday life.

Sewing, reuse and collective learning

Hands-on making is also part of Creative Circuits through the Open Sewing, Repair and Creation Studio, a collaborative setting in which visitors can use sewing machines, fabric paints and basic materials to repair, alter or personalise clothing. As well as encouraging sustainable practices through material reuse, the activity creates opportunities for meeting others, exchanging knowledge and strengthening connections among participants.

For families, the programme includes two workshops created by Matiz Filmes, bringing children and their guardians closer to the worlds of cinema and animation. In Mini Photographic Camera, participants make a cardboard camera inspired by the optical experiments of French artist Marcel Duchamp, investigating movement illusions through simple, playful mechanisms. In Cinema Puppets, children and adults create felt characters inspired by animation classics, trying basic sewing techniques while making their own protagonists.

The Creative Circuits programme reinforces the role of the Technologies and Arts Space as an environment devoted to experimentation, learning and the development of creativity. Beyond teaching techniques, it invites visitors to understand how images, objects and narratives are made, encouraging imagination, critical thinking and the collective creation of knowledge.
