Limescale clings stubbornly to glass shower screens, leaving them dull and apparently beyond saving. A simple household remedy is now attracting attention on social media: a DIY gel cleaner made from three everyday cupboard ingredients. It loosens deposits without scratching the glass or filling the air with harsh chemicals.
Why shower screens turn cloudy so quickly
Anyone living in a hard-water area will recognise the issue: after only a few showers, pale spots, streaks and a hazy film start to appear on the screen. This is not dirt in the usual sense, but a tiny combination of minerals and soap residue.
Warm tap water contains, above all, calcium and magnesium compounds. As water slowly dries on the glass, these minerals are left behind as a fine layer. Each shower adds another coating.
Over time, thin veils that are barely visible turn into hard crusts that seem to bite into the glass.
Reaching for the abrasive side of a washing-up sponge or cream cleaner can quickly make matters worse. Micro-scratches in the glass give fresh limescale an even better surface to grip. As a result, the shower screen can look permanently cloudy, even immediately after cleaning.

How to make your own anti-limescale gel cleaner
Preparation takes just a few minutes and costs far less than a branded supermarket cleaner. This quantity is more than enough for a standard shower screen:
- Mix the cornflour: Stir one tablespoon of cornflour into around 300 ml of cold water until all lumps have disappeared.
- Heat the mixture: Warm it in a saucepan over a low heat, stirring continuously, until it thickens and becomes slightly translucent.
- Take it off the heat: Remove the saucepan from the hob as soon as it has formed a gel-like paste.
- Stir in the acids: Add one tablespoon of citric acid powder and about 100 ml of clear household vinegar, then mix thoroughly.

For the homemade cleaner to work at its best on a shower screen, the order of use matters. Glass covered in heavy grime and soap residue will otherwise only become unnecessarily smeared.
Preparing the glass surface
- Rinse the shower screen briefly with warm water to remove soap residue and dust.
- Remove large droplets with a squeegee or cloth so the gel adheres more effectively.
- Put on rubber gloves to protect your skin from the acid.
Applying the gel and leaving it to work
Apply the gel to the affected areas with a soft sponge, a silicone spatula or directly by hand while wearing gloves. The key point is not to scrub; spread it on as you would a cream.
Then patience is required. Depending on the amount of limescale, leave the gel in place for:
- at least 15 minutes;
- 30 minutes for clearly visible, older deposits;
- up to one hour in extreme cases.
The gel layer dries slowly and keeps the acids directly on the limescale, allowing the minerals to dissolve gradually. Only then should you gently wipe over the surface with a soft, non-abrasive sponge or a microfibre cloth.
Aftercare: rinse and dry
Finally, rinse the shower screen thoroughly with clean water until no gel residue remains. Dry it with a microfibre cloth or squeegee. The glass should look noticeably clearer and feel smoother.

The smoother and more scratch-free the glass remains, the less easily fresh limescale can stick to it. Hard sponges and powder cleaners are therefore a genuine long-term problem in the bathroom: they may create surfaces that look “clean” in the short term, but gradually damage them.
