Concealing imperfections beneath layers of make-up has given way to the pursuit of healthy, plump and naturally radiant skin. With the rise of skin minimalism - a trend that favours a more streamlined routine and the natural appearance of the skin - the aim has become achieving luminosity without relying on coverage products.
According to dermatologist Paula Chicralla, the key to creating this effect lies not only in highlighters, but in strategic morning preparation built around layers of hydration and care tailored to the skin’s needs.
Below, the specialist shares six steps for achieving radiant, well-cared-for skin, with or without make-up.
1. Start by toning and preparing the skin
For Paula Chicralla, preparation is among the most important stages of a morning routine. She likes to begin by toning the skin, establishing an initial layer of care before applying the remaining products.
Cleansing is equally essential to this process. Micellar water can be used to remove residue and prepare the skin for the next stages, particularly when it suits the individual’s skin type and routine.
2. Use facial mists for freshness and luminosity
Hydrating mists are among the dermatologist’s preferred ways to keep the skin feeling fresher, more comfortable and more luminous throughout the day. As well as supporting hydration, this type of product can help restore a more well-rested appearance to the skin and create a finish that does not look artificial.
“I love using a mist because it is such a pleasant way to hydrate and bring that glow back to the skin. It is a simple step, but it makes a huge difference to the final result,” she says.
3. Give the eye area special attention
The eye area has its own characteristics and can quickly reveal signs of dryness. Paula Chicralla therefore considers hydration in this area essential, especially if make-up will be applied afterwards.
She recommends using products formulated specifically for this area, selected according to the skin’s needs and the texture that fits best into the routine. “Hydrating the eye area is essential. When the skin is dry, particularly in this area, make-up can crack. Good hydration makes the finish much more beautiful and natural,” the dermatologist says.
4. Build a glow through hydration
Rather than relying solely on illuminating products to produce a glow effect, Paula Chicralla prefers to create luminosity through skin that is properly hydrated and comfortable.
The choice of products can change according to the condition of the skin on a particular day. Moisturisers with different textures and active ingredients can be alternated as needed, always with the aim of keeping the skin looking plump.
“I like to look at how my skin is on that particular day and choose the product according to what it needs. The goal is always to have hydrated, comfortable skin with a beautiful glow,” she says.
5. Respect the skin’s needs each morning
A layered skincare routine does not mean applying as many products as possible. For Paula Chicralla, the strategy is precisely to assess the skin’s needs and select care individually. This approach also helps prevent an overly heavy routine, which may leave the skin uncomfortable or affect the finish of make-up.
“Well-prepared skin completely changes the result of make-up. Foundation, concealer and other products look better when the skin is hydrated. But the most interesting thing is that you can also simply let your skin show,” she explains.
6. Extend the luminous effect to the body
The concept of glow does not have to be limited to the face. Once she has finished her facial routine, Paula Chicralla also likes to add radiance to the body, particularly when she wants a more sophisticated effect for a special occasion.
Body products containing illuminating particles or a satin finish can be applied to strategic areas such as the décolletage, arms and legs, adding luminosity without necessarily using traditional make-up.
Understanding the skin’s needs
For the dermatologist, the most important thing remains adapting products to the skin’s current condition and needs. “I like to alternate products depending on how my skin is. There is no need to use everything every day. The important thing is to understand what the skin is asking for at that moment and aim for hydrated, comfortable and luminous skin,” she says.
Ultimately, the idea behind layered skincare extends beyond producing a beautiful effect for make-up. The aim is to prepare the skin so that it looks healthy and luminous on its own, making it possible to use fewer coverage products or even go without them at times.
For Paula Chicralla, a good care routine should make make-up a choice rather than a necessity for feeling good about one’s own skin. “For me, true luxury is being able to leave the house without make-up and like the skin you see in the mirror. When there is a good care routine, the glow comes from the skin itself,” she concludes.
