How to Clean Dark Bathroom Grout with Bicarbonate of Soda

Bathroom grout may become darker over time as dirt, product residue and moisture build up. Before turning to highly harsh solutions, a straightforward option may help where the dirt is only on the surface: make a paste using bicarbonate of soda and water, then apply it gently to the affected area.

Why does bathroom grout become dark?

The gaps between tiles are narrower and more porous than the smooth surfaces around them. As a result, soap deposits, dust and other particles can collect in these small spaces, making the grout look darker.

Constant bathroom humidity can also encourage staining and changes in appearance. However, a dark patch is not always simply surface dirt. Mould, water ingress or deterioration of the grout itself may need a different form of treatment.

How can bicarbonate of soda help with cleaning?

When combined with a small amount of water, bicarbonate of soda can be made into a paste. Its thicker texture makes targeted application easier, preventing the mixture from immediately running down walls or across floors.

The paste can be applied to the grout and gently worked in with a soft-bristled brush or one suitable for the surface. The aim is to help lift surface dirt without turning the task into harsh scrubbing.

How to clean grout without damaging it

Before using the mixture throughout the bathroom, test it on a small, inconspicuous section. This lets you check how the grout and tiles respond to the product, particularly where more delicate materials or finishes are present.

Next, spread the paste only over the areas that need it and scrub using light movements. Once finished, remove all residue completely with water or a damp cloth suitable for the surface, then allow the area to dry.

Does bicarbonate of soda remove all dark bathroom grout?

No. This mixture is better suited to improving the appearance of surface-level dirt. If the darkening is caused by persistent mould, water ingress, deep stains or material deterioration, bicarbonate of soda may not address the underlying cause.

It is also important not to mix bicarbonate of soda with different cleaning products unless their compatibility is known. Cleaning chemicals must never be combined on an improvised basis, especially if irritating fumes could be produced.
