Estéticas das Periferias 2026 brings São Paulo’s outskirts to the centre

When São Paulo’s cultural scene can seem to revolve around the same familiar circuits, Estéticas das Periferias 2026, running from 22 to 30 August, arrives to highlight where the city’s art truly gets its vitality.

Now in its 16th edition, and themed “Womanhoods in motion: from the outskirts to the centre”, the festival brings together more than 50 collectives for a 100% free marathon that deserves the attention of anyone seeking genuinely meaningful culture.

Its opening event at Sesc 14 Bis signals the project’s scale. Tessituras, directed by Dani Nega, brings together Leci Brandão, Taís Araújo, Linn da Quebrada, Fabiana Cozza and Brisa Flow on one stage. It is the kind of unprecedented gathering rarely available free of charge.

A festival programme across São Paulo

The event’s real flavour lies in how it moves through the city. The Paulista pavement, at IMS, becomes the setting for the fiercely contested Slam Tournament; Museu das Favelas hosts Amigas do Samba’s samba circle; and Ação Educativa welcomes photographer Pétala Lopes for her first solo exhibition.

The appeal of the programme is the chance to explore the city without postcode prejudice. There will be a graffiti and poster-paste takeover at a school in Vila Carolina, a party with an entrepreneurship fair and music at Praça Mascarenhas de Moraes in São Mateus, plus activities across neighbourhoods including Grajaú, Itaim Paulista and Jaçanã.
