Often overlooked in everyday cleaning, the kitchen extractor hood works continuously in the background. Yet it is usually one of the last appliances to be maintained. Once it becomes clogged, the room can feel stuffy, cooking is less enjoyable and the fan begins to sound laboured rather than quiet.
Why your extractor hood matters more than you think
Many people only pay attention to the hood when it starts making a racket or grease begins to drip from it. At that point, however, it may already have lost a significant amount of its effectiveness. A grimy hood finds it harder to draw in steam, allows odours to travel into other rooms and makes its motor work harder.
Uneven suction, louder noise and lingering odours are often just symptoms of filters packed with old grease.
This creates several knock-on effects. Fine particles produced by frying and grilling remain in the kitchen, reducing indoor air quality. If the hood has an opening section, internal panels and corners where grease collects will be visible. Wipe any accessible areas using a cloth lightly dampened with the same soapy water prepared earlier. Stay away from the motor and electrical components: this is a wipe-down, not a soaking.

To give stainless steel a tidy finish, use a microfibre cloth to apply a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar, then polish with a dry cloth. This leaves the surface clearer, with fewer streaks and fingerprints.
Do not use abrasive scourers, steel wool or bleach. These products can scratch and cloud the finish, and may cause permanent damage to modern hoods, especially brushed surfaces where every mark is visible.
