A straightforward kitchen solution works well for tarnished silver. It uses hot water, aluminium foil and bicarbonate of soda. An electrochemical reaction lifts the dark layer without abrasive rubbing.

  • Boil enough water to fill a small bowl.
  • Line the bowl with aluminium foil, with the matt side facing down.
  • Place the silver jewellery inside, removing delicate gemstones first.
  • Add two tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda.
  • Pour in boiling water until everything is covered.
  • Leave it for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on the level of tarnish.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water, then dry immediately using a soft cloth.

Suitable only for solid silver without porous stones. Prompt rinsing and complete drying help prevent it from tarnishing again.

The chemistry behind it

Aluminium and silver form a galvanic pair in an alkaline environment. Bicarbonate of soda raises the pH value. Electrons move from the aluminium foil to the silver surface. Sulphur compounds on the silver are reduced. The foil is sacrificed, while the silver regains its shine.

Never place gold-plated necklaces, deliberately patinated pieces or porous gemstones in the aluminium foil and bicarbonate of soda solution. Soapy water is the safer option here.

Airtight bags with anti-tarnish strips and little spare air slow the process. Bicarbonate of soda works reliably; baking powder is only partly suitable because it contains additives. With white gold, it is worth considering rhodium plating: a thin rhodium layer protects the metal and gives it a cool shine, and it can be renewed after several years. Depending on size and intricacy, replating costs noticeably more than cleaning, but it lasts well again.

Anyone with an ultrasonic cleaner should first test an inconspicuous item. Do not put watches with a crown in water, and never use it for pearls or glued items. One final detail makes a considerable difference: after drying, give the piece a brief puff of warm air before placing it in a bag. That leaves residual moisture with no chance to remain.
