Windows 11: Microsoft releases emergency fix after Patch Tuesday problems on Dell PCs

Microsoft has issued an emergency fix for Windows 11 after the latest Patch Tuesday caused worrying problems on some PCs.

The update has left many users seriously concerned. Microsoft has today released KB5121767, an out-of-band emergency update for Windows 11. The most recent Patch Tuesday caused troubling issues for a significant number of users, including PC overheating, severely degraded performance, rapidly draining battery life and unexpected shutdowns. The faults are numerous and could even damage a machine over time. This fix is intended to resolve them.

Windows 11 emergency update for Dell PCs with Intel processors

The issue affects people using a Dell PC powered by an Intel processor. If that applies to you and you are experiencing these problems, download the emergency update without delay. Should it not appear automatically, follow these steps:

• Go to Windows Settings.
• Open the Windows Update tab, at the bottom left.
• Select Check for updates if no update is displayed.
• Install it.

A compatibility issue

Even if you do not own a Dell PC and/or are not affected by these issues, the update may still be offered to you. However, there is no need to install it. The faulty Patch Tuesday creates a compatibility problem with the Intel Dynamic Tuning driver found on Dell PCs. This driver is designed to automatically manage processor power and temperature:

“This update addresses an issue affecting a limited number of devices with an Intel Innovation Platform Framework (Intel IPF) driver. This issue could result in changes to performance, power consumption, or system behaviour after installing recent Windows updates. A limited number of Dell devices that were unable to receive the July 2026 KB5101650 security update can now install this OOB update. This OOB update is recommended only for devices affected by this issue. If your device is not affected, no action is required.”

One important point: this out-of-band update only fixes the bugs. It does not alter the security fixes delivered by the problematic Patch Tuesday, which remains important to install.
