While many people write off their patio for the cold season, a quiet battle continues beneath the paving slabs. Moss, fine roots and weed seeds are simply waiting for the first mild day to surge back into action. Acting now, in the middle of winter, takes advantage of a clever effect and can save plenty of scrubbing, scraping and machine use later on.

Why a simple household remedy weakens moss and weeds in winter

On the surface, everything appears to be in deep dormancy: bare beds, damp joints and greyish slabs. Yet life remains active in the cracks of patios, driveways and garden paths. Roots, spores and seeds sit protected in the ground, merely pausing. Once the first warmer days arrive, they push upwards and turn clean joints into slippery green strips.

This is where the method comes in: gardeners use bicarbonate of soda, also known as baking soda or sodium bicarbonate, during winter. This kitchen powder dries out plant cells and attacks the roots while the plants are already weakened. Timing is crucial: anyone treating the area in January or February catches moss and paving-joint weeds at one of their most vulnerable points.

How to mix an effective bicarbonate of soda solution

Where bicarbonate of soda is useful - and where it is not

Useful as this trick may be, it is not a free pass for every surface. Bicarbonate of soda remains a concentrated salt and can harm soil life and cultivated plants if it is washed uncontrollably into beds.

Risks, limitations and useful additions

Bicarbonate of soda is not a miracle powder that keeps every surface permanently sterile. Heavy shade, continual damp and damaged joints will repeatedly encourage moss. In such cases, only a combination of several measures will help.

Useful additions may include:

  • repairing damaged joints or repointing them
  • preventing standing water, for example through improved drainage
  • cutting back overhanging branches to bring more light onto the surface
  • carrying out a basic clean in spring so that no thick layer of dirt can form

Pet owners should not allow animals to walk through puddles of freshly applied solution immediately after treatment, so that their paws do not become excessively salty. After rain and once the area has dried completely, this is generally no longer a problem.

Many households already keep bicarbonate of soda in the cupboard for baking, cleaning or tackling odours. The same powder can work quietly in the background during winter and take care of a large part of the unwanted paving-joint maintenance.
