Percarbonate: The old household remedy for grey tea towels

An unassuming powder from your grandmother’s day is quietly making a return.

Anyone who cooks regularly will know the issue: even premium tea towels can look dull after a few months. A grey film, yellow oil marks, dark coffee and tea stains – and expensive biological detergents only seem to improve their appearance superficially. Yet the answer is already sitting in many kitchen cupboards, rarely used: a traditional laundry aid that works with oxygen and refreshes fabrics remarkably thoroughly.

The forgotten miracle product for white tea towels

The product in question is sodium percarbonate, usually sold simply as “percarbonate” or “oxygen bleach”. It looks nothing special: a white, slightly granular powder that is dissolved in hot water.

Put simply, percarbonate is a solid form of hydrogen peroxide. Once it comes into contact with sufficiently warm water, it releases active oxygen. That oxygen breaks down colour pigments, grease and protein residues – precisely the substances that gradually turn kitchen towels grey.

Unlike chlorine bleach, it is much less harsh on cotton fibres. Rather than damaging the fibre structure, it mainly removes dirt, discolouration and odours. This makes it particularly suitable for tea towels, oven gloves, cleaning cloths and white aprons.

Why it works more effectively than many modern detergents

Many modern detergents rely on optical brighteners. In other words, fabrics appear whiter because a bluish coating reflects light differently. However, the actual dirt often remains trapped in the fibres.

Percarbonate works in a different way:

  • breaks down colour pigments from tomato sauce, coffee, tea and red wine
  • lifts grease from oil, butter and gravy
  • neutralises odours through its oxygen action
  • contains no added fragrance cocktail or optical brighteners

As the reaction produces only water, oxygen and a little soda, it is considered relatively environmentally friendly for household use. Any residues in laundry or wastewater are significantly less problematic than those from many specialist cleaners or chlorine-based products.

How the chemistry behind its whitening power works

Temperature is the crucial factor when using percarbonate. Many people use the powder incorrectly by simply adding it to a cold wash, then feel disappointed by the result.

Very little happens in cold water, as the powder remains largely inactive. The reaction starts only in hot water: oxygen bubbles form – invisible but highly active – and penetrate the cotton fibres. There, they oxidise organic residues that ordinary detergent struggles to remove.

For kitchen textiles, this pairing of heat and oxygen offers two benefits: stains are removed while the microbial load is also significantly reduced. Tea towels come into contact every day with food, raw meat, damp wooden chopping boards and work surfaces, so hygienic cleaning is about more than looks.

The “miracle bath” for grey tea towels: step by step

For badly stained kitchen towels, the most effective approach is a separate soaking bath. Here is how to do it in everyday use.

Equipment and dosage

  • a heat-resistant bowl or bucket
  • very hot water (at least 40 degrees; around 60 degrees is ideal for cotton)
  • 1–2 tablespoons of percarbonate per litre of water
  • a wooden spoon or similar utensil for stirring

Add the powder straight to the hot water and stir thoroughly until most of the granules have dissolved. Only then should the textiles be placed in the water. This ensures the oxygen phase is used to its full advantage from the outset.

Soaking time: patience pays off

The towels should be completely submerged. As a general guide, use the following soaking times:

ordinary discolouration, light stains around 2 hours
heavily greyed towels, old coffee stains 4–6 hours
stubborn old stains, greasy shadows, tomato marks overnight

Once soaked, briefly wring out the towels and put them straight into the washing machine. A standard wash with your usual detergent is enough to rinse away the loosened residue. If you wish, dry the towels in the sun afterwards – UV light provides an additional brightening effect.

Where the limits are: take care with delicate fabrics

Despite its benefits, percarbonate is not suitable for every fabric. Its alkaline, oxidising action is exactly what destroys grease and stains, but it can also damage animal fibres.

It is ideal for:

  • white or colourfast cotton tea towels
  • cotton tablecloths and napkins
  • cleaning cloths, face cloths and fabric napkins made from linen or durable mixed fabrics

It is less suitable for:

  • wool, silk and cashmere
  • delicate performance fabrics
  • intensely coloured textiles with poorly fixed dyes, as colours may run

If in doubt, test it first on an inconspicuous area. If colour comes away, stop the treatment. For coloured towels, use a lower dose and a shorter soaking time.

Safe household use of percarbonate

Although percarbonate is a common household product, it should still be handled with appropriate care. In concentrated form, the powder can irritate the skin and eyes.

  • wear rubber gloves when measuring and stirring
  • avoid touching your eyes directly, and wash your hands after use
  • store the powder somewhere dry and out of children’s reach
  • do not mix it with acids, such as vinegar, in sealed containers, as gas is produced

Anyone who already cleans with bicarbonate of soda, vinegar or citric acid should use these products separately from percarbonate: allow one treatment to work, rinse thoroughly, then prepare the next one. This keeps the reaction predictable and safe.

Suitable for far more than tea towels

Many households initially use percarbonate only on greyed kitchen towels, then quickly broaden its use. Its oxygen action can also help with:

  • dulled white socks and underwear
  • stains on bed linen, including sweat marks, make-up and tea
  • face cloths and towels affected by built-up odours
  • aprons with persistent grease marks

If you usually wash at low temperatures, it can be worthwhile planning an occasional warm wash with percarbonate. This removes odours and deposits that can otherwise build up with continual eco-temperature washing.

Why this traditional household remedy is worth using

Its greatest strength is the combination of powerful cleaning action, comparatively straightforward ingredients and use without complicated specialist programmes. Many users report that it has allowed them to remove chlorine-containing cleaners from their laundry routine altogether.

Percarbonate is not a replacement for ordinary detergent; it acts more like a turbo booster. Used at the correct dose and in sufficiently hot water, it can restore even kitchen towels that have been used for years to a condition where you are happy to leave them on display in the kitchen, rather than hiding them away in the cupboard out of embarrassment.
